Our community

The Munster Technological University (MTU) led 2022 Student Inc programme came to a successful conclusion on Wednesday 24th August with a showcase event in Vertigo, Cork County Hall, Cork, Ireland. The programme was part funded by the HEADLINES project. The event was attended by approximately 100 people from the academic and business communities.

The 2022 Student Inc. participants came from 5 different universities covering the entire west coast of Ireland: Munster Technological University, University College Cork, University of Limerick, Atlantic Technological University and Technological University of the South. The programme featured a diverse range of student business ideas with 50% of the ideas in the food and health sectors.
The guest speaker at the event was MTU graduate Vincent Forde, Founder of Gascon Medical, himself a Student Inc participant in 2015. Gasgon Medical is an award-winning start-up medical device company, based in Cork, Ireland, developing innovative fluid management products for the clinical market.

The programme commenced on May 30th and ran for 13 weeks. During that time the students were based in the on-campus business incubation centres in the 5 partners, attended one to one mentoring sessions (110 in total), Training sessions and workshops (52 in total), worked with the other students on the programme, got the opportunity to interact with more seasoned entrepreneurs from a broad range of sectors across the region and pitched to a panel of Angel Investors.

Programme Highlights: Customer Discovery. What connections did you make on the programme?: I gained a potential partner for the business as well as connections to potential customers. What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to Student Inc.?: Engage in the programme and approach with an open mind. The learning experience is worth the hard work and will be valued in any business or employment opportunity.

Programme Highlights: Meeting many incredible, like minded people & learning a new skill in entrepreneurship What connections did you make on the program: I connected with all tutors/entrepreneurs teaching the program, as well as all the students on the program. What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to Student Inc? You must definitely apply! Whether you are going to start a business one day or not, you will learn so much in such a short period of time as well as meet new friends & expand your network!

Programme Highlights: Gets you working on the start-up and gives you lots of contacts and connects What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to Student Inc.?: Make use of the program by reaching a lot of people and try to make the most out of the programme as it is a unique opportunity to help you connect with people related to your project that could help you out. Also, spend time with other members as well as they will ideas that you haven’t thought of.
Course: Digital Humanities & ITYear of study: 2nd Year
Programme Highlights: The quality and variety of mentors and teachers. What connections did you make on the programme?: Made friends that supported one another throughout the course. What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to Student Inc.?: Just go for it. Even if you think you’re idea isn’t perfect, the first month will help you understand your customers need and you can adjust from there.
Course: International Entrepreneurship Management Year of study: Masters
Programme Highlights: Getting to meet a diverse range of students with different backgrounds and different and interesting business ideas. Getting the opportunity to work on and develop a business full time, in particular to develop the physical proof-of-concept. Attending a variety of interesting workshops for topics such as how to sell your product or service, how to make promotional videos, how to present professionally and how to market and advertise your business. The lunch & learn sessions were also interesting as they discussed many of the challenges that other start-ups have faced and over-come. Getting to discuss ideas for both your business and other businesses. What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to Student Inc.?: Be prepared for hard work. The Customer Discovery workshop requires you to talk to a lot of people, so make sure you will be comfortable with that. Go to your local incubator in-person to meet and get to know the other participants in your area. This will give you a chance to talk about your business idea and the ideas of the other participants. You will learn a lot and receive a lot of advice. Make sure to have a chat with the other students in the incubator, it gives you a chance to take a break from work. Apply for the programme, it is well worth doing if you think that you might be interested in starting a business at some point in time.

Programme Highlights: I found the trainings and workshops invaluable for learning about all aspects of building and running a business, from sales, marketing and legal aspects, to pitching and video production, and everything in between. What connections did you make on the programme?: I made valuable connections with all of the other participants on the programme as well as with the trainers, mentors, and local entrepreneurs, all of whom offered fantastic advice and feedback. What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to Student Inc.?: You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by applying, even if you are in the very early stages and all you have is an idea, taking part in Student Inc will give you the time and resources to explore that idea and evaluate the market opportunity. The skills you gain during the programme can be taken with you into any career, whether you decide to continue to pursue your business idea or go into employment. Go into it with an open mind and don’t put pressure on yourself to have a perfect business plan by the end of the programme, because Student Inc is only the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey.
